Soccer Star Nabs Collegiate 'Player of the Week' Honors

Will Casey helped Stony Brook to its third shutout win of the year.

Former Ward Melville soccer standout Will Casey, now a key player at midfield/defense for the Stony Brook Seawolves, earned the America East conference's "player of the week" honors for his gamewinning goal on Sept. 28.

Casey, a senior from Setauket, helped the Seawolves beat Northwestern defending conference champions, broke a scoreless tie in the 66th minute by heading in a pass from sophomore Martin Giordano. The Seawolves (4-4-0) preserved the 1-0 lead for their third shutout win of the year.

Casey, a decorated three-sport athlete at Ward Melville, has totaled 38 goals in his collegiate career so far. He also scored the game-winner against Rhode Island on Sept. 13.

"Will has been working extremely hard on both sides of the ball," SBU head coach Ryan Anatol said. "He was very active against Northeastern and was a threat throughout the game. He scored a good goal and was very close to getting another. We expect more from him as we enter conference play."
