Seawolves Football Drops Home Opener 21-20 to Brown

Despite 153 yards from Miguel Maysonet and 74 yards from Brock Jackolski the Seawolves could not come away with the victory.

Despite a stellar performance from the running game, Stony Brook University dropped a heartbreaking 21-20 decision to Brown University in its home opener Saturday night at LaValle Stadium.

“I was pleased how we played through most of the game until that last drive where there was either three or four penalites that extended the drive that led to the winning score,” head coach Chuck Priore said. “If you’re a good football team those things don’t happen to you or the game isn’t close enough where they become that much of an issue in the game.”

The Seawolves went up 17-7 right after half time on a 10 play, 82-yard drive that culminated with a 26-yard touchdown run by Miguel Maysonet. Maysonet finished with 153 yards on 23 carries to go along with the touchdown. But after an 0-3 start the individual numbers mean nothing to Maysonet.

“I’m very disappointed,” Maysonet said. “We had a great week of practice and for us to not come out on top is very disappointing. I feel like we all played hard as a team and to have the outcome that we had – it just has to be a wakeup call for everyone and we have to come out tomorrow and forget about it and worry about our next opponent.

At the end of the day a loss is a loss and that means absolutely nothing. I’d rather rush for 0 yards and get a win then rush for 160 and get an “L,” he said.

Stony Brook led 17-14 after three quarters and went up 20-14 after a Wesley Skiffington field goal with 8:58 remaining in the game.

Brown started with the ball on its own 43-yard line after gaining 23 yards of field position because Stony Brook was off sides on the kickoff.

The defense looked like it grabbed momentum after forcing an incomplete pass by Brown quarterback Kyle Newhall-Cabellero on third-and-13. But a Stony Brook personal foul gave Brown the first down and new life.

The Seawolves defense forced Brown into a third-and-10 later in the drive but gave Brown another first down with a personal foul penalty. Stony Brook finished with 11 penalties for 133 yards.

Brown converted a final third down conversion from the Stony Brook 12-yard line, and two plays later Newhall-Cabellero found Tellef Lundevall in the end zone for the game winning score.

Stony Brook had one last chance as they started with great field position on the final drive after a 34-yard kick return by Brock Jackolski. But the drive stalled at the Brown 38 and Skiffington came on to attempt a 55-yard field goal. The kick came up short and Brown was able to run out the remaining clock.

“This is the third game we lost in a row,” Jackolski said. “It’s just getting old at this point and we need to stop what’s going on right now, turn it all around and I think get to practice and go all out.”
