Report: SBU's Sowell Takes Navy Coaching Job

SBU men's lacrosse coach to take reins of Midshipmen program.

Stony Brook men's lacrosse coach Rick Sowell, who led the Seawolves to the America East Conference regular-season title this spring a year after guiding them to the NCAA quarterfinals, is reported to have accepted an offer to become the next coach at the U.S. Naval Academy.

Corey McLaughlin of Lacrosse Magazine confirmed the signing on his Twitter page. According to Inside Lacrosse, Sowell was on the Navy campus and met with athletic director Chet Gladchuk Wednesday. The head coaching position opened up when coach Richie Meade was forced to resign.

It has not been reported whether Sowell will take his staff with him. They include James Montana, a fifth-year assistant, and Ryan Wellner, who just completed his third year.

Sowell has led Stony Brook to a 47-26 record in his five seasons at the helm. Products of the program include Kevin Crowley, the top pick in this year's Major League Lacrosse draft, and Jordan McBride, the all-time leading goal scorer in Seawolves history.

Sowell becomes the fourth coach to resign from his or her post at Stony Brook this year. That list also includes women's lacrosse coach Allison Comito and women's basketball coach Michelle Cherry.
