SBU Athletic Director: Stony Brook Belongs in FCS Playoffs

Stony Brook's loss to Liberty on Saturday has greatly threatened the Seawolves' chances for an automatic FCS playoff bid.

Stony Brook athletic director Jim Fiore has a message for the NCAA playoff selection committee. He says Stony Brook belongs in the 20-team FCS playoff field, according to a report published Sunday in Newsday.

After the Seawolves fell at Liberty on Saturday, the automatic Big South playoff bid seems likely to go to Liberty or Coastal Carolina. While the Sports Network poll had Stony Brook ranked at No. 6 and the FCS coaches poll had Stony Brook ranked at No. 8, the Seawolves probably won't be in the top 10 anymore when the new rankings arrive on Monday. But Fiore has made a case for the Seawolves, who are 18-3 over the past 21 games that include the loss to Liberty, a loss to an FBS team, and a loss in the 2011 playoffs, according to Newsday.

“Over 11 games, we’re certainly one of the top 20 teams in the country,” Fiore told Newsday. “I’m confident we’re deserving of the opportunity to play for the national championship.”
