Philadelphia Eagles Cut Maysonet From Roster

Miguel Maysonet had been signed in April as an undrafted free agent.

Former Stony Brook star running back Miguel Maysonet was waived from the roster of the Philadelphia Eagles in a surprise move on Monday morning, according to multiple news reports.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that Maysonet was waived because he had not been able to participate in any organized team activities due to an NFL rule preventing rookies who had not yet graduated to practice with veterans.

Newsday reported that the move may have been motivated by the Eagles' recent signing of tight end Will Shaw.

ESPN has reported that the cut may have been the result of a disagreement between the team's front office and coach.

From the ESPN report:

"Perhaps the Eagles felt they had too many running backs on the roster after signing former Cowboys starter Felix Jones last week to a one-year contract. But there may have been other factors. The front office wanted to keep Maysonet, but new coach Chip Kelly claimed he wasn't a fit in his system and wanted him gone, according to a source."

Newsday has also reported Maysonet might be a good fit for the Jets, who saw one of its running backs arrested on drug and weapons charges on Friday.

This past spring, Maysonet became the first-ever Stony Brook University athlete to be invited to the NFL scouting combine, and while he had hoped he would be drafted, he was later signed as an undrafted free agent by the Eagles. The fomer Seawolf, who was recently named "Male Co-Athlete of the Year" at Stony Brook, owns the all-time school rushing record at Stony Brook and was a finalist for the Walter Payton Award given to the best player in the NCAA's Football Championship Subdivision.
