Patriots Fall in County Championship Game

No. 2 Bay Shore upends top-seeded Ward Melville in the girls' lacrosse Class A title game.

Bay Shore's only loss this season came at the hands of Ward Melville, a 10-8 loss on April 20 that would later set the stage for a dramatic county championship game on Thursday night. "The girls were dying to play Ward Melville. They didn't want to meet anyone else in the final," Bay Shore coach Allison Pfeffer said.

No. 2 Bay Shore exacted its revenge and then some, defeating top-seeded Ward Melville 11-6 at Dowling College on Thursday night to win the Suffolk County Class A girls' lacrosse title.

Bay Shore (18-1) jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first while its defense kept the Ward Melville offense off target. Ward Melville (17-2) cut the Marauders' lead to one on a goal by junior Emily Rogers-Healion with about 11 minutes left, but Bay Shore closed out the first half with an 8-4 lead. The Patriots fared no better in the second half.

Marauders goalie Dylan Teitelbaum made 12 saves, including a big one with 10:32 left in the first half that would have otherwise let Ward Melville tie the score. Her coaches said she worked with a personal trainer on Wednesday at practice; whatever they did must have worked.

"She just did a phenomenal job in reading the ball today and listening to the keys that we told her," Bay Shore coach John Pfeffer said. "Certain people shoot certain ways, and as a goaltender if your coach is going to give you that information, you have to store it."

Sophomore Yuna Hur scored twice and junior Deryn Blaney and senior Rebecca Arent each added a goal for Ward Melville. The Ward Melville coach declined to be interviewed after the game.

Junior Cynthia DelCore and senior Caroline deLyra each scored three times for Bay Shore, which will play for the Long Island championship on Saturday.
