Maysonet Leads Seawolves Over Lafayette, 37-20

The Seawolves used a punishing second half rushing attack led by Miguel Maysonet's four touchdowns to defeat Lafayette on Saturday night.

After a flat first half that likely left the raucous Homecoming crowd at LaValle Stadium a little nervous, the Stony Brook running attack exploded in the second half en route to a 37-20 victory over Lafayette Saturday night.

Miguel Maysonet tied a career-high and LaValle Stadium record with four rushing touchdowns, each in the second half. Despite a combined 1/13 passing attack from Michael Coulter and Kyle Essington, the legs of Maysonet and Brock Jackolski were more than enough to lead the Seawolves to victory.

Maysonet finished with 194 yards on 22 carries and Jackolski chipped in 98 yards on 17 carries, running wild on Lafayette in the second half. Jackolski scampered for 25 yards on the Seawolves' first play in the second half and Maysonet followed that up by ripping off a 35-yard run that found pay dirt.

“We played as good a third quarter as we played all year,” head coach Chuck Priore said. “We took control of the game. I think we have some psychological things taken care of.”

Whatever it was that held the Seawolves back in the first half – the defense came away with some opportunistic turnovers but Lafayette had plenty of chances to score – vanished in the second half.

Maysonet capped a five-play, 42-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run that gave the Seawovles a double digit lead early in the third.

“Just get that first win under our belt,” Maysonet said when talking about the importance of the game. “Come out and get that first W. It’s hard being 0 and 3. So I was focused. We came out and finally got our first win.”

Lafayette pulled back within one score later in the third quarter after a 52-yard touchdown reception by Michael Bennett. But Wesley Skiffington, who became Stony Brook’s all-time leading scorer amongst kickers during the game, booted a 46-yard field goal that pushed the Seawolves' lead back to 10.

It was all about Maysonet again in the fourth quarter as he scored twice, once from 30 yards out early in the quarter and again from 9 yards to put an emphatic stamp on the game.

The Seawolves left the sellout home crowd buzzing after the game and will get back to action after a bye week when they host Presbyterian to open Big South play.
