J-School Project: Sports Leagues Growing for Kids with Special Needs

Parents and experts say the opportunity to play sports is key for children with disabilities or other special needs.

The Miracle League of Long Island, TopSoccer, Rolling Thunder, and the Challenger Division of Smithtown are all local sports leagues with one common theme: they are aimed at children with special needs.

Stony Brook University reporter Kelly Kuzman takes an in-depth look at these leagues in her report Take Me Out to the Ballgame! – Sports for Kids with Special Needs.

These programs often have their beginnings with families searching for opportunities for their own children. That was the experience of Steve Cuomo, coach of Rolling Thunder Special Needs Program, a track and field team. "Take out the disability and coach the ability," Cuomo says.
