Holland Reflects on Career as She's Named Top Female Athlete

Yale-bound athlete plays for the U.S. Olympic Development team.

She's a member of the U.S. Under-19 Olympic Development Team, and played in a string of exhibitions in Buenos Aires this past April. Still, Georgia Holland's favorite recent memories are beating Garden City in field hockey in 2009 and later winning the state championship.

Garden City was "the big team that couldn't be beaten, and we did it," Holland said.

The three-sport star and field hockey All-American recently recorded one more honor: she was named Ward Melville's outstanding female senior athlete, capping off a career that people will still be talking about long after she graduates.

"It's amazing," Holland said, juggling several trophies on Senior Awards Night.

Holland led the field hockey team to three straight Long Island titles, leading the county in scoring in her junior year and coming in second her senior year. The girls' lacrosse team had some successes of its own; Holland was second on the team in goals (32) and assists (15), helping the Patriots reach the quarterfinals of the county championship. During the winter, she started at point guard for the girls' basketball team.

Holland also excels in the classroom. This fall she will attend Yale, where she will play field hockey and possibly basketball, and is tentatively set to study either engineering or math.
