Garden City Field Hockey Defeats Ward Melville 5-0

Trojans dominate in Saturday's non-league game.

Score: Garden City 5, Ward Melville 0

Record: Garden City 5-0; Ward Melville 5-1

The Hero: Forward Catherine McTiernan, who scored three goals to lead the Trojans to victory. She scored twice in the first quarter to help Garden City build a two zip lead and once in the third to seal the deal.

The Turning Point: The game was scoreless for the first couple of minutes until Garden City went on a tear with McTiernan getting her two goals in quick succession.

The Quote: Catherine McTiernan: "We are very excited to have won this game. We lost to this team last year so we wanted to make a point of coming out strong against them."

Garden City Coach Diane Chapman: "We knew we had to execute on the offensive end in order to beat this team. They are a very strong team so we needed to stay focused and play hard. I believe we played amazing today though and dominated the game from start to finish."

Ward Melville Coach Shannon Watson: "What can I say. Garden City has a great squad. We will look at this game as a way to push ourselves and get ready for the rest of the season."

The Bottom Line: Ward Melville had chances on the offensive end to put the ball in the goal but were not able to capitalize. The Trojans, on the other hand, made the most of their opportunities and got goals by McTiernan and forwards Jenna Fuchs and  Mikaela Rix in the second half.
