Breaking Down the Stony Brook-Delaware Matchup

Women's team wins home opener in offensive explosion

Since the Stony Brook men's lacrosse team will take on Delaware on Saturday at LaValle Stadium, we thought we'd take some time to scout the opponent.

Delaware is starting to make a name for itself with a final four spot in 2007 and an appearance in the NCAA tournament last year. This year's squad returns eight of the ten starters and 25 of 34 letterwinners, so there is experience. Unfortunately for Delaware, one of those loses was Curtis Dickson and his 62 goals from last season.

So far this season, the Blue Hens are 4-2, though they have only played once away from home and dropped that contest to Albany. Their big challenge of the year so far came against ninth-ranked Johns Hopkins, who beat them convincingly to the tune of 18-5.

Leading scorer Eric Smith will be a priority for the Seawolves' defense. The attacker leads Delaware in both goals (10) and assists (10) and is picking up the slack in Dickson's wake. In goal, Noah Fossner has been putting up strong numbers, but most of that was against weaker opponents in his first three games. In his only true test, against Johns Hopkins, he let in 18 goals while making just seven saves. The Seawolves' offense could be in for a big day come Saturday.

Kevin Crowley is one of those Seawolves who will be looking for a big day. The team's leading scorer has already put seven into the goal in just two games. Goalie Rob Camposa has been solid in net, allowing 8.76 goals a game. Look for the Seawolves to dominate face-offs with specialist Adam Rand, one of the best in NCAA history, who is winning 74.5 percent of the draws this year.

Johns Hopkins 15, Stony Brook 8: Trailing by one late in the first half the Blue Jays scored seven unanswered goals to put the game away. Goalie Mickey Cahil made a season-high 15 saves in the loss. Samantha Djaha scored three goals and Melissa Cook and Alyssa Cardillo each had a pair of scores. The Seawolves were outshot 37-17 in the contest.
