Boys' Track Team Takes First-Ever League Championship

Ward Melville tops previously undefeated Sachem East for the League II title.

The Patriots' boys track team ran straight this season – to the League II championship. Results at the May 8 meet against Sachem East – also previously undefeated – yielded the team's first ever league title.

"This was truly a team effort by all! ... Really the whole team helped out in some way," coach Jerry Vessichio said in an email to Patch.

  • Kenny Troy won the 100 and 200 meter races; Vincenzo Battaglia finished 2nd in both.
  • Mathias Burner won the shot put (46' 10") and the discus (145').
  • The meet was closed out with the 4x800 meter relay team of Vincent Cicale, Lloyd Webb, Alex Micheals and Alex Fitzgerald with a time of 8:25.
  • Connor Christian won the 400 meters, while Jonathan Bogia placed 2nd.
  • Lloyd Webb won the 3200 meter race.
