Blogs: Hofstra Tried to Block Stony Brook Invitation to CAA Athletic Conference

Two fan blogs publish emails they say detail complaints made by Hofstra's president.

Hofstra University's top official reportedly tried to prevent Stony Brook's sports programs from being given a full invitation into the Colonial Athletic Association conference, according to a report published by a blog covering Stony Brook athletics.

The blog I'm A Seawolf, which is not affiliated with SBU, reported on a story published last week by Shadesof48.com, an athletics fan blog covering the College of William and Mary. That story reported that after the CAA recommended that Stony Brook, along with two other schools, be invited into the conference as a full member, emails from Hofstra president Stuart Rabinowitz questioned "the substance and process of the recommendation." Currently, Stony Brook plays in the America East for all sports except football, a team that will begin CAA play this fall.

I'm A Seawolf called Hofstra's move to block Stony Brook the "worst kept secret in the entirety of the Colonial Athletics Association."

It is unclear whether an invitation was formally made to Stony Brook; the CAA has not replied to the I'm A Seawolf blog. A Hofstra spokesperson did not return a Patch request for comment on the blog.

When asked for comment, Stony Brook athletic director Jim Fiore said in a statement: "We prefer not to comment on remarks others make concerning Stony Brook and conference affiliation. Our focus has been and always will be on the continued upward trajectory of Stony Brook Athletics. Stony Brook University is an attractive institution and brand. ... That being said, we are proud members of the America East Conference and CAA Football and look forward to continuing to compete for conference championships and NCAA Tournaments."
