Bears End Season with Some Scoring, But Still Take a Loss

Stony Brook School loses 54-24 on Friday night.

The Stony Brook School's final game resulted in its highest scoring performance of the season on Friday in a losing effort against Greenport/Southold/Mattituck/Shelter Island, 54-24. The Bears (0-8) saw their running backs break open touchdown runs, but couldn't put a stop to the playoff-bound Porters (5-3).

Heroes: From the opening drive, the Bears' running backs seemed loose and directed toward the endzone. Donald Liotine took a pitch 26 yards to start the momentum. Following up was Andrew White, who drove the remaining 45 yards off a give up the middle. It would take some time before the Bears could put any more points on the board, but ending the half, Liotine returned a kickoff for a touchdown. Later on Liotine and White would score on rushes for their second touchdown apiece.

Turning Point: Once the Porters took over the ball, it was clear they weren't going to be stopped easily. Their first drive lasted three plays before the score. But, that wasn't as impressive as the manner in which they progressed. The Porters pushed the ball up the middle and broke down the defense with strength and agility. Much of the Stony Brook defense found themselves on the ground empty-handed after attempting tackles. It was a fairly steady course of success for the Porters, with the Bears finally turning on the offense in their final drives.

Quote: "It was great to see the sophomores [Liotine, Marco Masakayan, and White] stepping up today. Age has probably been our biggest issue all season, but that excuse isn't going to hold next year. I told the guys that our main concern is putting time into the weight room. If these guys, being as young and small as they are now, can perform like they did today, then with some effort we'll have a successful team. But, it's going to take time and work," Stony Brook head coach Kris Ryan said.

Bottom Line: As it has been said before, the Bears are a young team. Some of the competition in this league can really exploit that inexperience, let alone the size difference. Greenport/Southold/Mattituck/Shelter Island is one of those teams. Their players hit hard on both sides of the ball, and after they hit they're looking around for someone else to hit. The Bears brought their intensity throughout this game, but there comes a point when one realizes there's more to the game than who wants it more. A lot of this team's playmakers will be returning next season, and they'll have been waiting a long time for a win once those games come around.
