#85 – Get Your Kayak On

Kayaking and canoeing are two ways to enjoy area waters.

You're probably going to see more and more of them: kayaks and canoes out in the waters of Setauket Harbor, Conscience Bay and Smithtown Bay. Why not get in on the action?

You can get a kayak or canoe right here in Three Village. , located on Shore Road, has been in business more than 20 years, selling and renting – you guessed it – canoes and kayaks. Car roof racks and other accessories are also available.

In fact, just down the road a bit on Shore Road is a perfect place to launch your kayak or canoe. That's where we found John Erhardt of Smithtown getting ready to put his kayak in the water on a recent sunny Saturday. "It's great, nothing like it," he said.

These activities are known to have multiple fitness benefits, including cardio health, weight loss and muscle development in the back, arms, and core. But be sure to read up on safety, first. Here's one website which offers safety tips, such as how much fresh water to carry and how to waterproof a first aid kit.

I love kayaking the local waters and being able to observe horseshoe crabs, turtles and birds in close proximity. I also strongly recommend taking a safety course.
