Ward Melville Student Receives National Writing Award

Leanna O'Brien was one of 520 award recipients nationwide.

It's safe to say Leanna O'Brien has the write stuff. The Ward Melville High School senior has been recognized by the National Council of Teachers of English for her writing skills, the school district announced Friday.

She is one of 520 students nationwide, and one of only 37 in New York, to receive this honor.

"There were so many talented writers, it's amazing to think that I would be included among them," O'Brien said.

Ward Melville principal Dr. Alan Baum described her as "an incredible writer."

"She is a pure talent and should be proud of herself," he said. "I know that Ward Melville High School is."
