Ward Melville Principal: 'Backpack Search Part of Quarterly Protocol'

Nothing unusual found in Friday morning search.

Students at Ward Melville High School were subject to a backpack search Friday morning as they entered the school that principal Alan Baum said is part of the school’s annual security protocols.

According to Baum, backpacks are checked at least once a quarter and are unannounced. Parents are not notified.

“We do periodic backpack searches in the morning throughout the school year to stay fresh and test protocol to see how we do,” said Baum. “The backpacks are opened up to see if anything inside can be harmful to individuals.”
