Students Donate to Help Save Marine Conservation Center

Local cause is the beneficiary of two student government fundraisers.

Following a pair of fundraisers in which the R.C. Murphy Junior High student government collected $1,500, the students decided to donate to a local cause.

They set their sights on the Ward Melville Heritage Organization's Marine Conservation Center, which was damaged during Hurricane Sandy. The organization in in the progress of .

The students' donation to the WMHO was matched by Peter Pitsiokos, chief operating officer of Gyrodyne Co. of America and a former student at the Marine Conservation Center, who pledged to match donations to the MCC up to $5,000.

Pitsiokos and WMHO president Gloria Rocchio came to the school just before spring break to accept the students' donation and tell the students all about the MCC's – including the role that Robert C. Murphy played in its history.
