Stony Brook's Kevin Courtney Named a Candidate for the 2014 Senior CLASS Award

Kevin Courtney, a senior on the Stony Brook baseball team, has been named one of 30 candidates for the 2014 Senior CLASS Award in collegiate baseball. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. 

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition. Courtney is among 30 candidates, and the pool will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. 

Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2014 College World Series® in June.

Courtney, of Lindenhurst, is a four-year starter for the Seawolves and has been integral toward the team's success. In 2011, he was an America East All-Rookie team selection after hitting .306 for a team that won 42 games. 

In 2012, he helped Stony Brook advance to the College World Series after hitting .293 with 38 RBI and earning NCAA Coral Gables Regional All-Tournament honors. In 2013, he led America East during conference play by hitting .348 with six homers and 28 RBI on his way to All-America East first team honors.

Off the field, Courtney has been involved in numerous community service activities, including taking an active role in Stony Brook's Hurricane Sandy relief in 2012, spending time with veterans at the Long Island Veterans Home, spending the day playing baseball with disabled children at The Miracle League and surprising young cancer patients with presents during the holiday season at the Stony Brook Cancer Center.
