Stony Brook University Cancels Monday Classes

First day of school has been postponed to Tuesday.

Stony Brook University announced via its Emergency Alerts website that Monday's classes – the first day of the fall semester – have been canceled.

The university attributed the cancellation to "the effects of Hurricane Irene and the anticipated cleanup operations throughout the region," according to the website.

The cancellation applies to the main campus, Southampton campus and Manhattan campus. While Stony Brook University Medical Center and the Long Island State Veterans' Home remain open, classes at the School of Medicine, School of Nursing, School of Health Technology & Management, School of Social Welfare, and the Dental School will not be in session on Monday.

Move-in day for campus residents was originally scheduled for Sunday, but the University on Thursday moved it up to Saturday. On Saturday, many students were excited to move in early and .

Those who were unable to move in on Saturday can do so on Monday between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. or notify their Quad Office of a further delayed arrival.

The campus did not lose electricity during the storm, described the roads as passable but still hazardous, and reported no injuries to students, faculty or staff.

"Campus facilities personnel have performed an assessment of the Stony Brook main campus and Southampton campus and are reporting only minor damage to some trees and no reported damage to campus buildings," the university said via its Emergency Alerts website.
