Stony Brook Univeristy's State-of-the-Art Marine Sciences Center To Open Friday

The ribbon cutting will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday and include tours and demonstrations.

On Friday, right on schedule, the ribbon will be cut on a brand, new, state-of-the-art Marine Science center at Stony Brook University's Southampton campus.

The LEED-certified, 2,500-square-foot building, which has been under construction since June 2012, features a sea water lab with a computerized circulation system with a titanium heat exchanger to preheat or pre-cool incoming sea water, achieving energy savings while reducing the overall size of the heating and cooling equipment, according to the university.

The building, on Old Fort Pond, which connects SoMAS to Shinnecock Bay and the Atlantic Ocean and  is adjacent to the current research building, also houses two wet labs, an analytical lab, a classroom, conference room and other lab and support spaces, including an outdoor tank area that will expand the lab resources outside of the building.

The lab will be used, the university said to support the growth of SoMAS' undergraduate marine and environmental science programs, including Semester by the Sea, in which students from all over the world are invited to spend a term living at the Southampton campus and using SoMAS' laboratories and vessels.

Most of the funding for the $8.3 million facility was secured in the New York State budget — $6.9 million — by Sen. Kenneth P. LaValle, R-Port Jefferson, and Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele Jr., I-Sag Harbor with the remainder paid for by Stony Brook University.

The ribbon cutting will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday and include tours and demonstrations.
