Statewide Association Lauds Local Teacher

Jaclyn Steigert teaches earth science at R.C. Murphy Junior High School.

A Three Village teacher and Nesconset resident is the recipient of the Fellows New Teacher Conference Award, the Three Village school district recently announced.

The Science Teachers Association of New York State recognized Jaclyn Steigert, who is in her third year teaching earth science at in Stony Brook. Her award supports her attendance at the organization's 116th annual conference in November.

Murphy principal Vincent Vizzo said the honor "couldn't happen to a better teacher." He described her as a dynamic, hands-on teacher.

"She's a great, young new science teacher and we're so proud of her," Vizzo said. "The kids really love her. She really makes science come to life."

Steigert said she "cannot wait to learn new things to incorporate into the classroom."

Steigert is one of three advisors for Murphy's Science Olympiad team, an elite team that is a strong finisher each year in the statewide competition, and will appear as Dorothy in the upcoming Three Village Teachers Association fundraiser production of "The Wizard of Oz."
