School Notebook: Three Village Students Deliver Holiday Cheer

25 Years of Outreach

The student government at Murphy Junior High teamed up with students at Arrowhead and Minnesauke led the way with a toy drive for the Gerald Ryan Outreach Center in Wyandanch. This year marked the 25th straight year of collaboration for the Outreach Center for Murphy Junior High, and resulted in the donation of thousands of new and gently used toys.

Floor Wars a Success

At Gelinas Junior High, the annual "Floor Wars" contest between homerooms on the first and second floors served as a toy drive for the Town of Brookhaven which resulted in more than 500 toys collected. This year the second floor emerged the winner with 290 toys collected.

Mount Toy Drive Benefits NANA's House

The organization Never Alone, Never Afraid, Inc. – also known as NANA's House – serves more than 100 needy families by providing a food pantry, thrift shop, and gift shop where they can spend "Nana Bucks" for the items they need. The student government at Mount Elementary collected toys for NANA's House and visited the center to deliver their donations.

Holiday Cheer All Around

Setauket Elementary students coordinated a giving tree, while Ward Melville's student government coordinated a collection for the Marine Corps Toys for Tots drive. Students in technology and family/consumer science classes at Gelinas pitched in to make dancing puppeteer bears, crayon turkeys, wood-turned whistles and soft teddy bears for the donation effort. Student musicians at Nassakeag Elementary visited the Long Island State Veterans Home to perform songs and lead a holiday sing-along.
