Please Drive Safely on School Grounds, High School Principal Says

Ward Melville principal implores the community to be mindful behind the wheel.

Following the discussion of school budget cuts and state testing at Tuesday night's school board meeting, high school principal Alan Baum took the microphone and went in a different direction.

"I’m here with a request. A plea. And it won’t cost us a dime," he said. "I’m asking you to please – when you are on school property, and even when you’re in the community – can you please drive carefully?"

Afraid that it's just a matter of time before a serious injury occurs, Baum implored the community to be mindful behind the wheel. He said fender-benders happen every week, and said people on school grounds have even been clipped by cars – that don't stop.

While he said "there are plenty of people who are driving prudently," others who drive carelessly are modeling dangerous behaviors.

"Let’s have the conversation," Baum said. "Let’s bring it to a greater awareness. Just drive carefully. Slowly. You’re in a school parking lot."
