Nearby: 'Students, Not Scores' Rally Planned for Saturday

School officials will rally with the community in support of students following the release of controversial standardized test scores.

As his open letter to state officials makes its way around educational communities across the state in near-viral fashion, Comsewogue Superintendent Dr. Joseph Rella has called for a rally in support of Comsewogue students this coming Saturday.

Dubbed "Students, Not Scores," Rella will be joined by at least one elected official, educators, and parents and students at Comsewogue High School at noon to call on state officials to make some changes in the way student testing is carried out.

"We will commit to working TOGETHER to support our schools and encourage our kids. We all know they are MUCH MORE than a test score!" one school board member posted on the event's Facebook page.

State Assemb. Steve Englebright, D-Setauket, is expected to be in attendance. Dick Ianuzzi, president of the New York State United Teachers union, is also expected to be in attendance.

T-shirts with the phrase "Students, Not Scores" will be available at the rally.

"This rally will bring together hundreds of concerned parents, students and education advocates from all over Long Island to remind NYSED and that students are more than a test score," according to Rella's announcement.
