Minnesauke Students Take Part in Scarecrow Competition

Sixth graders' designs currently on displays along the sidewalks of the Stony Brook Village Center.

The infamous characters from “The Wizard of Oz” recently took shape in the sixth-grade classrooms at Minnesauke Elementary School when the grade level completed designs for this year’s Stony Brook Scarecrow Competition.

With the help of their teachers and parent volunteers, the students conceptualized their projects and worked collaboratively to make their ideas come together. Using traditional and nontraditional building materials, the four sixth-grade classes created designs to resemble Dorothy, the Cowardly Lion, the Tin Man and the Scarecrow from the beloved tale. The project fit in perfectly with the grade level, as community service and peer collaboration are two concepts focused on throughout the year.

The completed designs will be on display this month along the sidewalks of the Stony Brook Village Center. Winners of the annual contest, organized by the Ward Melville Heritage Organization, will be announced in late October.
