Mass Causality Drill Planned for Sunday at High School

Drill will involve more than 100 'victims' as part of the district's emergency preparedness plans.

Fictional smoke and students playing victims will be part of a mass causality drill happening Sunday at Ward Melville High School.

Three Village School District has partnered with the Setauket Fire Department to conduct the drill, which will involve more than 100 victims, including students and faculty.

Members of local emergency management agencies and first responders will put safety practices into action as part of the district’s ongoing partnership with the Setauket Fire Department.

Due to the scale of the drill, neighboring emergency responders and law enforcement will be on hand to assist. Ward Melville Assistant Principal Michael Owen said an automated call would be going out to parents on Friday to let them know the drill would be taking place.

Owen said the district has been planning for the drill for a year.

“It’s the first time we are doing anything of this scale,” said Owen. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to practice our procedures and is part of a partnership that has evolved with our local fire department.”

The drill will take place at Ward Melville High School from 9 a.m. until noon on Sunday.
