Local Resources for Three Village Students

From after school study programs to interactive art exhibits and cool bookstores, Three Village has the hot spots for students.

It's that time of year when students are choosing their outfits for the first day of school and buying fresh notebooks and pens. But are they preparing for a successful academic year? Here are a few tools which both students and parents can utilize to help make this year the best one yet.

Study Island: This web-based study guide found at http://www.studyisland.com helps assess 3rd through 8th graders' aptitude for New York State exams. Allowing students the chance to review in a fun and exciting way they can expand their test-taking capacities. By taking a pre and post-test they can monitor their improvement as they learn at their own pace.

Castle Learning (formerly School Island): Once kids graduate to high school they jump from Study Island to School Island (http://www.studyisland.com ) to review for their Regents exams.

Bridge Program: The Bridge Program is a partnership between the Three Village Central School District and Suffolk County Community College which allows eligible seniors the opportunity to complete their requirements for graduation while taking college courses and earning credits at SCCC. It's a great way to bolster self-confidence and academically challenge students.

Cyberbullying: Don't know what it is? Visit www.stopcyberbullying.org to find out how the new generation of bullies is using technology to torment and publically humiliate other kids. Learn how to help prevent it and take action if you or someone you know is a victim of cyberbullying.

Register to take a golfing class, or learn how to belly dance. Need to brush up on your computer skills or want to get your SCUBA license? Check out the course list here.

Kaplan Test Prep: With a classroom location in the heart of Stony Brook University campus, the Kaplan Test Prep center prepares students for the SAT, PSAT, ACT, GRE, GMAT, LSAT, MCAT, DAT, OAT, PCAT and NCLEX exams. For more information or to enroll in a Kaplan class, call 1-800-KAP-TEST or visit www.kaptest.com.

Clark, the library has something for everyone to enjoy.  Looking for some fun programs for your youngest? Visit www.emmaclark.org/kids and climb the learning tree. Teens in grades 7 through 12 will benefit from the information and groups just for them at www.emmaclark.org/teens.

Borders Books: Borders offers more than just a cool place to meet up with friends to study. For both primary and secondary school students, various incentive programs will be unveiled during Educators Appreciation Week, October 6 through 10. You could also go purchase your favorite book from English class.

The Long Island Museum: Known for its abundance of antique carriages, one-room schoolhouse, and rotating exhibits, the Long Island Museum is a treat for any visitor. The museum encourages hands-on learning and participates in various educational programs for classes. Not going on a field trip?
