Legislator Hahn Talks Fracking with Arrowhead Students

Sixth grade Pi class at Arrowhead urged county legislature to fight hydrofracking.

Last year, Suffolk Legis. Kara Hahn, D-Setauket, passed a bill that banned hydrofracking waste water from being accepted at Suffolk's sewage treatment plant. Students in Mrs. Christina Maffia's then-fifth grade Pi class had written letters urging Hahn to share their opinions that fracking is dangerous to the environment, and on Wednesday, Hahn paid a visit to the same class, now in sixth grade, to thank them for their letters.

Hahn talked about the hazards of fracking wastewater, along with a discussion of Long Island's aquifer and drinking water, and reinforced the idea that each person an make a difference by being involved in their community.

"The state is still deciding whether they will allow fracking," she told the students Wednesday. "Certainly I would recommend you contact your state representatives on this issue."

Hahn presented the students with certificates of appreciation for their involvement. After the presentation, she said she hoped it reinforced the idea of good citizenship.

"It was really special to know that students were that knowledgable about the issue and that caring about the environment," Hahn said.
