Leaving a Colorful Legacy at Setauket Elementary

Setauket Elementary School sixth-graders have continued the tradition of helping to beautify their school and increase their peers’ knowledge of art history through their grade level’s mural initiative.

Each year, the school’s graduating class completes one or a small series of murals based on the works of one or more famous artists. As art appreciation is discussed at length in the art program, each of the pieces selected has been studied by the students throughout their elementary careers. This year’s projects centered on the works of Georgia O’Keeffe, René Magritte, Charles Bibbs and Franz Marc.

This is the 12th year of the Setauket sixth-grade mural project, an initiative coordinated by retiring art teacher Renee Caine.

“When I started, my goal was to bring a bit of the art world to the walls of Setauket – to create a type of walking museum,” explained Ms. Caine. “Each of the murals encompasses a different style of art and different techniques. It is a project that the students look forward to each year – in fact, they begin asking what sixth-grade murals they will be painting in the fifth grade.”

“I really enjoyed painting the details and getting the chance to paint on our school walls in a beautiful way,” said sixth-grader Ella Bear. “I hope that future generations of Setauket students see the murals and are inspired to paint new ones when they are in sixth grade.”

“My favorite was painting the blue bird in the one mural because it had a different meaning for me than the other pieces,” said Will Shangold. “I liked the calming nature of the painting and was excited to have a hand in painting it, since it was one of my favorites pieces to study.”
