Learning to Stay Healthy at Setauket Elementary

Setauket Elementary School third- through sixth-grade students recently had the chance to take an up-close look at the field of medicine when members of the Stony Brook University Class of 2015 physicians assistants program visited the building.

During the event, the students attended a variety of hands-on and informational health literacy workshops.

The stations focused on the heart, germs and the brain. Students learned how the heart pumps blood and is a muscle that never stops working through a fist pumping station; tested their heart rate both before and after a short exercise; learned how neurons allow the brain to function; and the effectiveness of hand washing using “germ goo” and black lights.
