Gelinas Student Eliminated from Spelling Bee Nationals

Isabelle Scott describes the experience as "excellent."

Isabelle Scott, the Setauket teen who won the Long Island regional Scripps Spelling Bee and headed to the nationals earlier this week, was cut from the competition in the third preliminary round, according to a story published Wednesday in Newsday.

"This has been an excellent experience. It's been so incredible. The people have been incredible, too," Scott told Newsday. "I've never done anything like this before."

Out of the 281 competitors, 244 of them – including Scott – were eliminated in the third round, which is a computerized test featuring spelling and vocabulary components.

Among the words Scott spelled correctly were "juggernaut" and "melee."
