Board of Ed Approves $1.8 Million Spending Plan to Create and Restore Jobs

Money will also be used to implement programs.

The Three Village Board of Education on Tuesday approved a spending plan for $1.8 million it received from the federal government's education jobs fund.

Approximately $700,000 of that amount will be used this year, and $1.18 million will be used next year. The plan was approved by a 5-1 vote with one member absent from the meeting.

The board agreed to use the funds for restoration of excessed personnel and to create and restore additional positions. The board also approved using the monies to provide additional services such as a Regents support program that will offer intervention services for students who need to retake Regents examinations like the Algebra 2/Trigonometry Regents.

Board Accepts Town's Tax Levy

The school district tax levy for 2010-11 that voters approved last election was also also accepted by the board. Residents of the Town of Brookhaven will see an increase of 4.43 percent, while Smithtown residents will see an increase of 9.38 percent over last year, with the latter increase greater due in large part to a change in the equalization rate.

Board Members, Students Honored

Students were in attendance at last night's meeting in honor of School Board Recognition Week. Several student representatives were on hand to pay tribute to board members for their contributions and service.

Also recognized were Special Olympians from the district for their contributions to the Empire State Games.

"This year we had twelve wonderful athletes who trained all year long for a week of track and swimming events," said Setauket Elementary principal Dr. Anne Rullan, who was also recognized by the board for her efforts. The Olympians were presented with certificates.
