Back to School 2011: 10 Tips from Three Village Teachers

Our back-to-school series continues with helpful highlights from the teachers' welcome letters.

Each year in Three Village, the district's teachers and administrators post welcome-back letters on their schools' websites. They're full of excited sentiments for the start of a fresh, fun school year – and they're also full of tips, advice, and instructions. Culled from the Three Village teachers' welcome letters, here are 10 tips to start the school year off right.

1. "It will be very helpful to you and your child to be at the bus stop early until the running times become routine." From the Minnesauke kindergarten welcome letter.

2.  "Whenever you send lunch money to school, please send it in a Ziploc bag with your child's name, my name, and his or her lunch choice written on a slip of paper or Post-It note inside the bag. Exact change is a tremendous help!" From Mount teacher Mrs. McNally's kindergarten welcome letter.

3. "We get hungry in first grade, so please be sure to bring a snack for the afternoon." From Arrowhead teacher Mrs. Michalski's first grade welcome letter.

4. "I’m sure you had a lot of exciting adventures over the break. It would be a great idea to write some of them down on a piece of paper so you can share them the first week of school." From Mount teacher Ms. Payne's second grade welcome letter.

5. "Please make sure your child knows which bus number he or she takes to and from school and has it written down." From the Arrowhead teachers' third grade welcome letter.

6. "Please do not purchase a bag with wheels. They tend to be a safety hazard around the bus circle." From the Mount teachers' third grade welcome letter.

7. "Make sure you have a personal reading book in school at all times, starting with the first day of school." From Mount teacher Mrs. Von Bargen's fifth grade welcome letter.

8. "Sixth grade is a time of transition, so the expectations will be much greater and the work more difficult, but that doesn’t mean we won’t have a great time learning together!" From Mount teacher Mr. Lingner's sixth grade welcome letter.

9. "We have a busy parking lot during the morning and afternoon 'rush' hours. We ask everyone to drop off and pick up passengers in the designated area on the side of the school building and not in the front traffic circle." From the R.C. Murphy JHS welcome letter.

10. "E-mail may be a fast and convenient way for you to communicate with staff members, but it is not necessarily the best way to receive an immediate reply or convey a message. ... Many teachers prefer to use the phone to speak directly to parents." From the Ward Melville High School letter concerning email communication.
