Town of Brookhaven Mulls Expanding Landfill [POLL]

Supervisor says town is dependent on the landfill for revenue.

In a recent meeting with environmentalists and civic leaders, Brookhaven town supervisor Mark Lesko said the town is dependent on its Yaphank landfill for revenue and is even considering expanding it, according to a report published Monday in Newsday.

The landfill brings in about $45 million in revenue for the town but is expected to reach capacity in about 17 years, Newsday reported.

Expanding the landfill "would result in extending the life of the landfill, but it would also ensure financial stability for this township for as long as this landfill is operational," Lesko said.
