Survey: Old Field Roads Need Reconstruction

Engineering survey completed at a cost of $100K.

An engineering survey of the village-owned roads in Old Field has proved them to be dangerous and in need of reconstruction, the village announced Tuesday.

"The overall assessment is that our publicly-owned roads are in dire need of reconstruction," Mayor Michael Levine said. "They are dangerous as they presently exist, they are unsightly, they haven’t been upgraded in at least a decade – probably more than that – and they need to be redone."

Levine said the survey, performed by Port Jefferson Station-based Hayduk Engineering, cost the village $100,000.

The entire 4.1 miles of village owned roads are subject to renovation, and a rough estimate put the price tag at approximately $2 million. Details of the plan include building a proper sub base under the road, fixing the drainage, and repaving.

The village does not yet know how it will pay for the project.

"We’re sensitive to the impact it’s going to have on people economically," said trustee Ted Rosenberg, the village's commissioner of streets and roads. “The cost of asphalt is a wild card because it's tied to the cost of petroleum.”

The village’s next step will be putting the project out for bid. If able to acquire the necessary funds, village officials envision reconstructing the roads starting in the spring.

last November authorizing the village to borrow $100,000 for the engineering and survey work to enable a bid package to be produced for the project.
