Reports: SBUMC Could Lose Big if Debt Ceiling Deal Includes Medicare Cuts

Think Magazine and the New York Times report the state's teaching hospitals could lose funding amounting to $1 billion per year.

If cuts to Medicare are included in the final outcome of federal lawmakers' debt ceiling proceedings, Stony Brook University Medical Center could lose up to $30 million in funding, according to reports.

Think Magazine reported Friday that SBUMC's senior officials are closely watching the debate, quoting hospital CEO Dr. Steven Strongwater as saying, "While there is no formal proposal on the table, we have heard that significant cuts to Medicare medical education payments have been discussed that could have a negative impact" on the hospital.
