Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the New York Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act (NY SAFE Act) on Tuesday as state lawmakers tightened up gun regulations in the wake of the Newtown shooting.
The measure expands the state’s ban on assault weapons and strengthens guidelines to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill. It also limits the size of gun magazines to seven rounds, down from a limit of 10.
We asked our Facebook fans how they felt about the new gun law. Here's what they had to say (be sure to add your own thoughts on the topic in the comment section below this article):
Steve Walters: Such a mistake gun control is proven to be ineffective at curbing violent crime.
Rob Vazquez: Strict gun laws keep guns out of the wrong hands, look at Chicago. Oops wait...
Wendy Blake: It's foolish. Criminals will get guns regardless of laws. Crazy people too. If someone is determined there is always a way. These laws only limit law abiding citizens. It does nothing to stop those who are not. Way to screw with the Constitution.
Gibrila Z Banse: Try pouring more money back into the states mental health system. This is just a bandaid. Gun, knife or bat the problem of mentally ill people roaming the streets undiagnosed still remains.
Sean Brown: People don't understand what government gun control means. Its a method for them to control the people. The more control we give up, the easier it is for them to take whatever liberties they please. People ask why the need for 30 round magazines. I'll tell you...because the government has fully automatic weapons with 30 round magazines!
Steve Walters: I don't own an assault weapon I own an AR-15 it's a defensive weapon. With the proper ammo it's excellent for self defense. It's also used in several of the shooting sports including one of the highest pursed matches in the world. There are many reasons to have many guns one for each purpose.
Ruben Santos Jr: There are way to many weapons out there already.....However, there should be some measures taken.... Assault weapons should at the least require special registrations and permits....
