Reader Feedback: New State Gun Law

Patchogue Patch readers share their thoughts on the state's new gun legislation.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the New York Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act (NY SAFE Act) on Tuesday as state lawmakers tightened up gun regulations in the wake of the Newtown shooting.

The measure expands the state’s ban on assault weapons and strengthens guidelines to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill. It also limits the size of gun magazines to seven rounds, down from a limit of 10.

We asked our Facebook fans how they felt about the new gun law. Here's what they had to say (be sure to add your own thoughts on the topic in the comment section below this article):

Steve Walters: Such a mistake gun control is proven to be ineffective at curbing violent crime.

Rob Vazquez: Strict gun laws keep guns out of the wrong hands, look at Chicago. Oops wait...

Wendy Blake: It's foolish. Criminals will get guns regardless of laws. Crazy people too. If someone is determined there is always a way. These laws only limit law abiding citizens. It does nothing to stop those who are not. Way to screw with the Constitution.

Gibrila Z Banse: Try pouring more money back into the states mental health system. This is just a bandaid. Gun, knife or bat the problem of mentally ill people roaming the streets undiagnosed still remains.

Sean Brown: People don't understand what government gun control means. Its a method for them to control the people. The more control we give up, the easier it is for them to take whatever liberties they please. People ask why the need for 30 round magazines. I'll tell you...because the government has fully automatic weapons with 30 round magazines!

Steve Walters: I don't own an assault weapon I own an AR-15 it's a defensive weapon. With the proper ammo it's excellent for self defense. It's also used in several of the shooting sports including one of the highest pursed matches in the world. There are many reasons to have many guns one for each purpose.

Ruben Santos Jr: There are way to many weapons out there already.....However, there should be some measures taken.... Assault weapons should at the least require special registrations and permits....

To Bob Micca: Our leaders are not Mum about them. They are directly addressing the problem by saying that all guns must be registered, including transfers from private sales and gun shows. We have to eliminate legal guns.

I see your point, Ed. All the criminals and ghetto gang folk are rushing to their nearest police precincts and turning in all their guns, starting with their weapons of mass destruction.. Obama speaks about his home-town all the time; the murder capital of the USA.. Chicago. . "Crooks & Crazies of Chi-Town. I guess you forgot that you've been breaking the existing law murdering your fellow humans with your illegal guns. You didn't know they were illegal. Right? But First? Let's eliminate legal guns. What you gotta say 'bout that, HAH!"

You are right Bob! Under the cover of darkness our state at breakneck speed determined this is the most important thing on the agenda. Meanwhile, the taxpayers suffer and Sandy victims suffer even more waiting for a state that has not one dime to provide to recovery set aside, so Cuomo begs the FEDS for help and rolls over to their demand for gun control....ie no LIB support from you.....no billions on the way. Even NY State has been compromised and addicted to federal handouts. Well this has been the Democrat way of winning elections for half a century now. Hispanics that are reading this, dont let the DEMS?LIBS fool you. Don't end up like others that have addicted to their handouts. Every human deserves better treatment. Beware of their lies and research conservative values.

Ed, Researching the mess Cuomo caused in his liberal craze to stomp on the constitution? Here is a bit....many gun manufacturers have now refused to sell guns in NY. This includes all law enforcement agencies here. Win win for the criminals...lose lose for law abiding American citizens. You and your lib bretheren dont fool me for a second, this is nothing more than a case of inch by inch to get what you want. No guns for the law abiding folk but the eleite get to keep their armed guards. Let them eat cake right!?

One other bit. As King Cuomo ranted to his kingdom....."it doesn't take ten bullets to kill a deer" I wonder: Did he ever read the Constitution? I did and don't see any reference to deer hunting in the second amendment. Does he know the laws of his own state that he runs, not to mention his legal prowess???? I do and here they are direct from the DEC NYS website which prohibits use of....... •An autoloading firearm with a capacity of more than 6 shells (one which requires that the trigger be pulled separately for each shot), except an autoloading pistol with a barrel length of less than 8 inches. So you see, you can't even use a 10 round magazine OR a semi automatic gun. Once again, more lies from the libs.
