Poquott Village Increases Patrols for Halloween Weekend

Village move mirrors county actions.

As a preventative measure, the Village of Poquott has added extra code enforcement officers for Saturday and Sunday nights.

Three officers will patrol the village on both nights, up from the typical one.

"We have single person coverage unless there's something going on," said Bob Fikar, chief of code enforcement in Poquott. "We don't even have enough cars to put everybody in, but we'll be doing foot patrols, too."

In past years, residents complained that people from outside the village bring their children into the village to go trick-or-treating. But mayor Barbara Donovan said it hasn't been a problem in at least two years.

"We handle it," she said.

Fikar said the Setauket Meadows neighborhood off Hulse Road is the new popular place in town for kids to go trick-or-treating.

The village's move mirrors that of the Suffolk County Police Department, which is also increasing patrols this weekend.

"To help ensure that residents of Suffolk have a safe and happy Halloween, our police department will be putting more officers on our streets," county executive Steve Levy said in a statement Friday. "Parents are asked to remind their children that while Halloween can be a fun holiday, it should be celebrated in a responsible manner."

Levy said residents can call 852-COPS for a quick response in a non-emergency situation.
