New Sidewalks Coming To Route 25A

The construction of sidewalks is underway on the south side of Route 25A in the vicinity of Nicolls Road near the Setauket/Stony Brook border.

The project is part of a $2.2 million state department of transportation initiative to improve walkability at 22 sites throughout the state, according to Eileen Peters, an NYSDOT spokesperson.

It's goal is "to provide safe and comfortable transportation facilities for non-motorized traveler[s] that will comply with the American Disabilities Act requirements," she said.

The area stretches from Hawkins Lane and the Long Island Rail Road station to Nicolls Road.

Also part of the project: a six foot high chain link fence will be installed in the vicinity of the train station, so as to enhance safety and define the walkway. Gaps in the pathway are being filled, ramps are being added.

"In some locations crosswalks are being added or restriped, additional bicycle route signs, pavement markings, shoulder repairs and bicycle friendly drainage grates are being provided," Peters said.

A separate project funded by Suffolk County will see sidewalks installed on Nicolls Road between Route 25 A and Stony Brook University in 2014.
