Mayor: So Far, So Good At Port Jefferson Beaches After Sandy

Port Jefferson beaches may have been spared severe damage.

Despite all the flooding and pounding surf, early reports are saying that Port Jefferson beaches might have been spared the kind of damage it has experienced in past storm, this according to Mayor Margot Garant who visited the beaches during and after the storm.

“Nothing too significant,” she said of the potential damage. “We are pleased but I will wait for our engineer to officially weigh in.”

Damage to Port Jefferson beaches from multiple storms have resulted in damage and shortened beaches with much of the sand eroding through the sieve-like 100-year old jetties on either side of Mount Sinai Harbor. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and New York State are covering 87.5 percent of the total cost of repairs with the village kicking in the rest of the money.

Hurricane Sandy had officials worried before the storm came that the wind and surf could cause even more headaches for the already battered beaches. The village might even have benefitted from this latest storm.

“Looks to me as if we may have ‘acquired sand and beach’ but it depends on the tides,” Garant said.

Look for future posts on the conditions and ongoing repairs at Port Jefferson’s beaches.
