Legislature Votes to Name Forsythe Meadow After Nora Bredes

Former legislator, environmental activist, passed away in August; honoring would be effective beginning in February.

Following the in mid-August, the Suffolk County Legislature voted unanimously on Tuesday to name part of Forsythe Meadow in Bredes' memory.

Bredes represented the Fifth Legislative District from 1992 to 1998, and prior to that led the Shoreham Opponents' Coalition effort in a nine-year battle to close the Shoreham Nuclear Power Plant.

The preserve portion of the 36 wooded acres will be named the "Nora Bredes Preserve."

"What she did for the Three Village community was embody the democratic process," said Peggy Ford, who spoke at Tuesday's legislature meeting in Riverhead. "She said if you work through the legislature, if you work through government, you can accomplish the most. This is a symbol of that."

Bredes died on Aug. 18, at age 60, of breast cancer.

Legis. Vivian Viloria-Fisher, D-East Setauket, sponsored the measure, which states the the renaming will be effective beginning Feb. 12, 2012. The resolution still requires the signature of the county executive.
