Health Advisory Issued Against Swimming in Area Beaches This Weekend

Suffolk's Department of Health Services says rainwater runoff can affect water quality at some beaches.

Due to heavy rainfall, the Suffolk County Department of Health Services on Friday issued an advisory against swimming at 67 beaches across the county, including some from the Three Village area.

The advisory reads: "The advisory is based on the potential that bacterial numbers in excess of New York State standards, resulting from the heavy rain, will impact these areas. The beaches covered by the advisory are located in areas that are heavily influenced by stormwater runoff from the surrounding watersheds and/or adjacent tributaries, and, because of their location in an enclosed embayment, experience limited tidal flushing."

Officials advise swimmers that it's best to stay out of the water until at least 24 hours – meaning two successive tidal cycles – after the heavy rain stops. For more information, beachgoers can visit www.suffolkcountyny.gov/health or call 631-852-5822.

The affected beaches are:

  • Bayberry Cove Beach
  • Bayview Beach
  • Grantland Beach
  • Indian Field Beach
  • Little Bay Beach
  • Soundview Beach Association Beach
  • Stony Brook Beach
  • Stony Brook Yacht Club Beach
