GOP Hopeful Absentee Ballots Turn Loss Into Win in 1st District Council Race

Democratic candidate Valerie Cartright beat Republican Leslea Snyder by 349 votes.

The margin of votes between Democratic candidate Valerie Cartright and Republican Leslea Snyder in the race for Brookhaven Town Counci’s District 1 was 349 votes, with Cartright coming out on top, but Republican Chairman Jesse Garcia is hopeful the count of absentee ballots will mean victory for Snyder.

According to the Suffolk County Board of Elections there are about 590 absentee ballots to count for the District 1 election.

“We feel confident in our chances,” said Garcia in a phone interview Wednesday morning. “Leslea ran a positive, forward thinking campaign. A lot effort and work was put in that race and I think in the end paper ballots will reward her."

Cartright’s said she is not diverted by the news and will remain focused on the issues she has been working in Brookhaven.

“I won’t be distracted by the thought of a challenge. I am not a stranger to challenges. I will stay focused on what is important and stay focused on the needs of Brookhaven.”
