FAA Officials Tour MacArthur Airport

Acting FAA Administrator Michael Huerta says agency is early in the process in selecting where to house NextGen air traffic control facility.

The Federal Aviation Administration will build its new consolidated air traffic control center in New York, but it remains unclear if the facility will be located in Ronkonkoma.

On Monday, acting FAA Administrator Michael Huerta met with local elected officials and toured Long Island MacArthur Airport (LIMA), one of the locations being proposed to house a new regional air traffic control facility.

Huerta told the Associated Press that the FAA is “very early in the process for a very important decision.”

Among the local officials joining Huerta Monday were Islip Town Supervisor Tom Croci, Islip Deputy Supervisor Trish Bergin Weichbrodt, Islip Councilman John Cochrane, Rep. Tim Bishop, Rep. Steve Israel and Sen. Chuck Schumer.

Choosing a new location for its NextGen air traffic control facility is part of the FAA’s $2.3 billion modernization plan that will consolidate its 49 air traffic control facilities across the Northeast to four over the next 10 years.

Town officials have been active in promoting MacArthur Airport as the right choice for the FAA’s new consolidated facility.

“This site sits at the crossroads of some of Long Island’s most critical transportation networks, and includes the largest industrial corridor in New York State,” said Croci after yesterday’s tour and meeting with Huerta. “There is simply no other location as prepared for this project as Long Island MacArthur Airport.

Huerta’s visit to MacArthur comes two weeks after Croci hosted local and state elected officials at an as part of an effort to “encourage” the FAA to house its NextGen air traffic control facility at the airport.

At the press conference, Croci said locating the new facility at LIMA would preserve the 524 air traffic control positions currently on Long Island and add another 500 jobs. It would also have a positive impact on construction jobs in the region as well since the NextGen facility would be a new build, he said.

This is clearly a case of paranoia, well beyond that of common NIMBYism.

the town of islip is addicted to FAA money and like and drug addict they have to return for and new fix so as to feed their habit. They become blind to the drug ( FAA money), and how will destroy this town and themselves even to the point of death. This drug money becomes even more of addiction during difficult economic times that we are in. Let's stop the addiction and cold turkey and soberly look at the options and ways to save ourselves and our communities from this scourge.

How about saving 1000 jobs that already exist on Long Island, most of them right at MacArthur Airport? How about not losing 100 million dollars in annual payroll? How about keeping your neighbors employed and not forcing them off the island? They don't want to go but it sounds like you do. Need help packing?

I only ask for a safe and healthy environment to live. Sacrificing our environment will cause residents to flee for their lives. There are alternatives to expanding the airport that will attract jobs and residents. The areas surrounding major airports have suffered extreme deterioration of the quality of life leading to poverty and community destruction so to serve the convenience of the wealthy. Don't let the Islip area turn into a red zone of foreclosures. Let's build an economy that can sustain our lives and our economy. Don't be deceived by gj who sounds like the airport official or FAA or a mouthpiece for their propaganda and deceit. They are experts at deception and fraud and dangle jobs and money in front of you to blur and confuse the truth.Write to the Islip Town Hall at 655 main st, Islip, NY and tell the Supervisor and town board to reject the expansion beyond the needs of the surrounding communities
