Environmental Group: Englebright's an "Eco Star"

New York League of Conservation Voters lauds assemblyman for contributions to environmental progress in the state.

The New York League of Conservation Voters this week recognized state Assemb. Steve Englebright, D-Setauket, as an "Eco Star" for contributing to the progress of environmental issues facing New York State.

Englebright also received the same award in 2008.

"This is actually a wonderful recognition. I value it greatly," he said in an interview on Thursday.

Englebright was lauded for his sponsorship of the Solar Industry Development and Jobs Act, which the NYLCV said "is poised for success" in 2012. The bill would set a state goal of developing 5,000 megawatts of solar power by 2025, which would both create jobs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in New York. Englebright said the bill is at the top of his legislative agenda for those reasons.

"Having the League as a validator of the importance of this bill is very helpful," he said. "It really advances the likelihood of a robust solar energy industry in the state."

NYLCV president Marcia Bystryn said Englebright as well as four state senators, two other assemblymen, and one former state legislator were pivotal in making progress towards a "stronger, healthier, and greener" New York in 2011.
