Dredging Ahead for Stony Brook Harbor

Suffolk County to award $1.4 million bid for dredging, spoil to replenish nearby Long Beach.

Suffolk County Department of Public works will be awarding a bid to a Port-Jefferson based company for the dredging of Stony Brook Harbor and Porpoise Channel.

Gil Anderson, commissioner of Suffolk's Department of Public Works, said the county will award two separate bids to Gibson & Cushman to dredge Stony Brook Harbor and Porpoise Channel, in addition to dredging the Nissequogue River, Times of Smithtown reports.

The company will be paid $1.4 million to dredge roughly 40,000 cubic yards of spoil from Stony Brook Harbor and Porpoise channel, according to Anderson.

The material that is dredged up will be placed on the nearby Long Beach in Smithtown to help with beach nourishment. The beach was heavily damaged by storms in recent years including Irene, Hurricane Sandy and this past February's blizzard.
