County to Hold Public Hearing on Sandy Response

Locals invited to share feedback on Thursday at legislative building in Smithtown.

The Suffolk County Legislature will hold a public hearing on Thursday to pore over the overall preparation and response to Superstorm Sandy, which left hundreds of thousands powerless in the county and caused widespread damage to homes and properties.

The hearing will be run by the legislature's committees on public safety, energy and economic activity and will take comments from members of the public who want to speak out on the storm response.

If you would like to speak at the meeting, which takes place at 6 p.m. at the Rose Y. Caracappa Auditorium in the William H. Rogers Building at 725 Veterans Memorial Highway in Smithtown, please call 631-853-4070.

While much of the post-Sandy discussion on Long Island has centered around the Long Island Power Authority and its work in restoring power to the 1 million customers knocked out by Sandy, this hearing will focus on the overall response, which includes examining the work of local governments, the county and other organizations that played a role in the recovery.

I am here visiting friends and cannot believe how the town of Huntington can just leave all of these trees down or cut up on the sides of the roads. It is very dangerous coming around curves and when the road is only half as wide as it should be due to the cuttup trees piling up on the side. Please come pick them up Town of Huntington!

No offense meant - just want to clarify something for the public. The Islip Bay Constable and Harbormaster positions don't "protect the water when the SCPD can not" - they do it always, and have been doing so long before there was a SCPD. They are a specialized law enforcement agency that has been doing that work since the Town was founded. And in accordance with NY State law they are NOT subservient to the SCPD or any other law enforcement agency. The are professional full-fledged law enforcement officers hired form civil service lists, with appropriate NY State required academy and related training, and full powers of arrest and all other authorities necessary to do their specialized jobs on and around the water. THEY and no other are the primary marine and conservation law enforcement entity in the Town of Islip. While the SCPD does provide certain general police functions townwide, their primary job is within the Suffolk County Police District, primarily on land, and the SACPD does not have patrol responsibilities in many areas in Suffolk County that are not part of the County's police district.

Yep. But taxpayers need to get out and vote on school budgets. Target marketing works - holdingRead More art shows on voting day, calling parents to come to vote spreading word through the kids. All registered voters need to get out and vote. The system will continue to be the same unless voters show up and vote no.
