County Sued Over Solar Carport Contract

EDF Renewable Development is suing the county for $12.5 million after plans for a solar carports in Ronkonkoma never came to fruition.

Suffolk County has financed construction of six solar carport sites on county-owned land over the past couple of years, but plans for a seventh carport site in Ronkonkoma were scrapped from the $70 million project and that now has the county facing a lawsuit.

According to a Newsday report, EDF Renewable Development has filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court claiming that its former subsidiary Eastern Long Island Solar Project spent $10 million on equipment to build carports at a site near the Ronkonkoma Long Island Rail Road station. Those carports, however, were never built amid concerns that it would interfere with the Ronkonkoma Hub project, Newsday reported.

EDF Renewable Development is seeking $12.5 million from the county in the lawsuit, which will be heard next year.

The county has called for a dismissal of a suit, charging that EDF Renewable Development "has no legitimate legal claim and failed to meet its obligations under the contract," Newsday reported.
