County Continues to Find Infected Mosquitoes in East Setauket

Six more insect samples test positive for West Nile virus.

Suffolk County has announced a new group of West Nile-infected mosquito samples has been found throughout the county, with one from East Setauket collected between Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 and five from East Setauket collected between Aug. 18 and Aug. 20.

The county has not released the locations where the mosquito samples were taken.

Some parks continue to be closed to evening activities, though none in Three Village have been closed this year. The county also continues to spray pesticides in certain areas to control the threat of West Nile, though no areas in Three Village have been sprayed this year.

The total number of infected samples collected in East Setauket this summer is eight. The total in all of Suffolk so far this year is 251, with 68 infected birds found and six human cases reported.

"We are seeing record numbers of infected mosquitoes this year and it is likely to
be a while before mosquitoes become dormant for the season," said Dr. James L.
Tomarken, commissioner of Suffolk County Health Services, in a statement.
